Our time together in this seaside city will include exploring Newports architecture, art and history.
Date: September 27, 28 & 29th
Location: Castle Hill Inn
Our time together begins at 3pm on Wednesday, September 27th in Newport with an orientation lecture by the esteemed Professor Richard Guy Wilson, Architectural History, University of Virginia, who has written over a dozen books and been an Architectural commentator on PBS. Then, we will tour Hunter House , a famed mid-18th Century Georgian Colonial. This evening we will dine in a private home.
On Thursday, September 28th we will tour 18th & 19th Century homes including the remarkable Isaac Bell House a shingle style designed by McKim, Mead and White and Kingscote a 19th Century Gothic Revival. After lunch we will continue the tour of Architecture & Interiors by visiting Chateau sur-Mer a landmark of Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling and Marble House, an early 19th Century Newport ‘cottage’.
Then, Thursday afternoon we will enjoy sailing the Narragansett Bay in a wooden schooner while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Newport. Our day will end with a real New England Clambake on the far edge of the bluffs.
After breakfast on Friday, September 29th, we resume our house tours by visiting The Breakers, interior decoration by Jules Allard and Sons and Ogden Codman,Jr.; designed by renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt, followed by a unique and specialized tour exclusively for our group called ‘Beneath the Breakers,’ where we will explore the underground tunnels and systems of this iconic house.
We will end our time together after a group lunch.
