Travelogue: Veni, vidi, vici

We came. We saw. We cultured. In six days, we walked more than 70 miles, visited more than a dozen showrooms, sipped countless demi cups of espresso, and experienced more moments of pure inspiration than we could have ever imagined. The imprint of Salone will stay with us for many seasons to comeuntil the next WRJ field trip be it to Paris or Pocatello. En Italia, we learned that we learn best as a collective. The more eyes, the more insight. . . .

McAlpine
McAlpine Interiors is the partnership of Bobby McAlpine, Ray Booth and Susan Ferrier. Their interiors firm, in existence since 1997, attracts clients from across the United States with designs for both the public and private sectors including residences, restaurants and a chapel. They maintain offices in Atlanta, Nashville and New York. The driving concept of the firm is to create timeless, emotionally evocative interiors that reflect the vision and needs of their clients. The firm’s founder, Bobby McAlpine, is known for his acclaimed work both in the architectural and interiors field and follows in his work the pursuit to create “the inheritable house.” It is this approach which has led the firm to regional, national and internationally recognized work in publications such as Architectural Digest, Southern Accents, House Beautiful, Veranda, House and Garden, Metropolitan Home, Traditional Home and British House and Garden. Having always produced custom furniture, McAlpine debuted his own furniture line, McAlpine Home, in 2002 with upholstered pieces by Lee Industries in North Carolina and English-made case goods from MacRae in Atlanta. In his best-selling book from Rizzoli International, McAlpine speaks poignantly from his head and heart about everyone’s personal search for home. Armed with the perspective of a southerner and an arsenal of architectural experience, he reveals his thoughts on grace, the human condition, tenderness of place and what we know to be true in our lives, all based on his body of work created over the last three decades.

Travelogue: Acculturation

When designers travel, they spot things: the steely purple on the walls of an enchanting brunch spot; the dry-stack retaining wall off the autostrade; turquoise window frames decorating a butter-yellow casa; linen borders on bath towels and cashmere lining in leather boots; metal seahorses floating inside a Moncler window. Milan breathes inspiration. Whether touring the immaculate factory of Loro Piana to connecting espresso dots around the Duomo, the WRJ designers are on empirical overdrive as . . .

Guiding Light

We dont use the word perfect very often out of respect for the fact that few things are truly flawless. And yet perfect is precisely the word that comes to mind when considering the glass work of Carlo Moretti. Each piece produced by the studio's master glassmakerson the masterful island of Muranois flawless in form and execution, the embodiment of a seemingly impossible binarybold yet ethereal. Like the Ovale lamp: The handblown Murano-crystal base would be enough to win our hearts, and yet, th . . .
